Last weekend, four of our senior brothers traveled to Houston, TX to see UConn Men’s Basketball play in the NCAA Final Four. This year’s tournament was anything but predictable, with top-seed Purdue getting eliminated in the first round, and a Final Four absent any one, two or three-seeded team. The UConn huskies were the favorite to win it all in Houston after their impressive matchup against Gonzaga University, dominating them with a 28-point win. Senior brothers Sammy Jacinto, Cam Irvine, Colby Zegzdryn, Tyler Salzillo, and former chapter president Ethan Lovallo knew they had a chance to witness school history with only a month left in their college careers, and could not pass on this opportunity that every college student dreams of fulfilling. The seniors were pleased after watching UConn’s 13-point win over the University of Miami that would hoist the Huskies to compete in their fifth national championship game.
Ethan, Tyler, and Colby decided to stay until Monday night’s game for a chance to witness UConn win a fifth national title, what would be the school’s first since 2014. Though they knew the energy throughout the Storrs campus on Monday would be unmatched, they yearned to watch one more dominant performance by the huskies. When I asked Ethan what this all meant to him, he responded,”Watching UConn Men’s Basketball win the national championship live was a surreal experience that I will never forget. I feel so privileged that I was able to go to Houston with some of my best friends and witness greatness.”
It goes without saying that us at CT Alpha are delighted with UConn’s historic tournament run, which will bolster school spirit, increase applications, and solidify UConn Men’s Basketball as a “Blue Bloods” program. We look forward to seeing what heights the sports programs will reach in the coming years.
